# Odaiba, Ariake and Toyosu: events on the bay

The reclaimed islands in Tokyo Bay are where Tokyo holds its biggest indoor events: Comiket and Design Festa at [Tokyo Big Sight](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E3%83%93%E3%83%83%E3%82%B0%E3%82%B5%E3%82%A4%E3%83%88%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%98%8E3-11-1), arena concerts in Ariake, pro basketball in Aomi and gigs in Toyosu. Between shows it is a waterfront leisure area with sea views, malls and teamLab Planets. The list below is updated daily with what is on across the bay.

## Four areas on the water

Odaiba is the name most people use for the whole bay area, but it is really four places. Daiba is the seaside part, with the [Fuji TV building](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%83%95%E3%82%B8%E3%83%86%E3%83%AC%E3%83%93%E6%9C%AC%E7%A4%BE%E3%83%93%E3%83%AB%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%AF%E5%8C%BA%E5%8F%B0%E5%A0%B42-4-8), a small [Statue of Liberty replica](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E8%87%AA%E7%94%B1%E3%81%AE%E5%A5%B3%E7%A5%9E%E5%83%8F%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%AF%E5%8C%BA%E5%8F%B0%E5%A0%B41-4-1), the artificial beach facing Rainbow Bridge and the malls [Aqua City](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%A2%E3%82%AF%E3%82%A2%E3%82%B7%E3%83%86%E3%82%A3%E3%81%8A%E5%8F%B0%E5%A0%B4%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%AF%E5%8C%BA%E5%8F%B0%E5%A0%B41-7-1&query_place_id=ChIJ38lFO_aJGGARc4lgPvxik3g), [Decks](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%83%87%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF%E3%82%B9%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E3%83%93%E3%83%BC%E3%83%81%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%AF%E5%8C%BA%E5%8F%B0%E5%A0%B41-6-1) (home of the indoor Tokyo Joypolis) and [DiverCity Tokyo Plaza](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%83%80%E3%82%A4%E3%83%90%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B7%E3%83%86%E3%82%A3%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%20%E3%83%97%E3%83%A9%E3%82%B6%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E9%9D%92%E6%B5%B71-1-10), which has the Zepp DiverCity live house. The life-size Unicorn Gundam stood outside DiverCity from 2017 until its display ended at the end of August 2026.

Aomi, next door, has the science museum [Miraikan](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%97%A5%E6%9C%AC%E7%A7%91%E5%AD%A6%E6%9C%AA%E6%9D%A5%E9%A4%A8%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E9%9D%92%E6%B5%B72-3-6) (closed for renovation from October 2026 until spring 2027) and Toyota Arena Tokyo, opened in October 2025 on part of the old Palette Town site as the home of the Alvark Tokyo basketball team. Ariake is the convention and concert district: Tokyo Big Sight, Ariake Arena, Tokyo Garden Theater in the Ariake Garden complex, the [Ariake Coliseum](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9C%89%E6%98%8E%E3%82%B3%E3%83%AD%E3%82%B7%E3%82%A2%E3%83%A0%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%98%8E2-2-22) tennis stadium and the newer [EX Theater Ariake](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=EX%20THEATER%20ARIAKE%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%98%8E3-3-8&query_place_id=ChIJDSeiPgCJGGARsuDnTtE5FYo). Toyosu, across the canal, has [Toyosu Market](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E8%B1%8A%E6%B4%B2%E5%B8%82%E5%A0%B4%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E8%B1%8A%E6%B4%B26-6-1), teamLab Planets, the Toyosu PIT live house and long waterfront parks.

## Tokyo Big Sight and the conventions

[Tokyo Big Sight](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E3%83%93%E3%83%83%E3%82%B0%E3%82%B5%E3%82%A4%E3%83%88%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%98%8E3-11-1), the building with upside-down pyramids, is Japan's largest convention centre. It hosts Comiket in summer and at the end of the year, Design Festa twice a year and a long run of trade fairs. Many trade fairs are for business visitors only, so check that an event is open to the public (ippan kokai, 一般公開) before you go.

Big fan events now mostly sell tickets or wristbands in advance, and the queues outside can be long and fully exposed. In summer there is little shade and the heat on the concrete is serious; in winter the wind off the bay is cold. Toilets and convenience stores near the halls get swamped, so arrive with water and snacks already in your bag.

- Bring cash in small notes for doujin and indie stalls. Many sellers cannot take cards.
- Coin lockers at the stations fill up early on big days. Travel light.
- On convention days, the first trains of the morning are already full of people heading to the same doors.

## Arenas, halls and live houses

[Ariake Arena](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9C%89%E6%98%8E%E3%82%A2%E3%83%AA%E3%83%BC%E3%83%8A%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%98%8E1-11-1) and [Toyota Arena Tokyo](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=TOYOTA%20ARENA%20TOKYO%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E9%9D%92%E6%B5%B71-3-1&query_place_id=ChIJZ9N24FqJGGARd4rMGFoM6NA) host big concerts, K-pop and sports. [Tokyo Garden Theater](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E3%82%AC%E3%83%BC%E3%83%87%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B7%E3%82%A2%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%98%8E2-1-6) is a tall, tiered hall where even the top seats feel close to the stage. [Zepp DiverCity](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Zepp%20DiverCity%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E9%9D%92%E6%B5%B71-1-10&query_place_id=ChIJ9asxJPiJGGARYejRf2YfJHg) and [Toyosu PIT](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E8%B1%8A%E6%B4%B2PIT%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E8%B1%8A%E6%B4%B26-1-23) are standing live houses, the kind where you pay a drink charge at the door on top of the ticket, often in cash. The Ariake Coliseum is the home of the Japan Open tennis tournament and also hosts other events.

The hard part is leaving. When a sold-out arena empties at 9pm, tens of thousands of people head for the same two small train lines. You can join the queue, have dinner nearby and leave an hour later, or walk to a less obvious station. From Ariake Arena, [Kokusai-Tenjijo](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%8A%E3%82%93%E3%81%8B%E3%81%84%E7%B7%9A%20%E5%9B%BD%E9%9A%9B%E5%B1%95%E7%A4%BA%E5%A0%B4%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%98%8E2-5-25&query_place_id=ChIJmWxhsemJGGAR5ARhQg_Wthc) and [Shinonome](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%8A%E3%82%93%E3%81%8B%E3%81%84%E7%B7%9A%20%E6%9D%B1%E9%9B%B2%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E6%9D%B1%E9%9B%B22-8-10&query_place_id=ChIJlccAWM-JGGARvWiM9lSPP6o) on the Rinkai Line are each about 17 minutes on foot, and their platforms are often calmer than the nearest Yurikamome stops.

- Top up your IC card before the show. The ticket machine queues after a concert are long.
- Check the last train before the encore. The Yurikamome and Rinkai lines are separate companies with their own timetables.

## teamLab, the seaside and the seasons

[teamLab Planets](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%83%81%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A0%E3%83%A9%E3%83%9C%E3%83%97%E3%83%A9%E3%83%8D%E3%83%83%E3%83%84%20TOKYO%20DMM%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E8%B1%8A%E6%B4%B26-1-16) in Toyosu is a walk-through artwork where you go barefoot, wade through water that can reach your knees and lie in rooms of light and mirrors. Wear trousers you can roll up or shorts, and book a [timed ticket](https://www.teamlab.art/e/planets/) ahead. The official run has been extended until the end of 2027.

Without an event, Odaiba is a good half day. Walk the beach at sunset with Rainbow Bridge and the city skyline across the water, then stay for the night view. Rainbow Bridge has a [free walkway](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%83%AC%E3%82%A4%E3%83%B3%E3%83%9C%E3%83%BC%E3%83%96%E3%83%AA%E3%83%83%E3%82%B8%E9%81%8A%E6%AD%A9%E9%81%93%20%E8%8A%9D%E6%B5%A6%E5%8F%A3%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%AF%E5%8C%BA%E6%B5%B7%E5%B2%B83-33-19), a slow and windy way back towards Shibaura, which closes in bad weather. At [Toyosu Market](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E8%B1%8A%E6%B4%B2%E5%B8%82%E5%A0%B4%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E8%B1%8A%E6%B4%B26-6-1) you can watch the morning auctions from the [visitor galleries](https://www.shijou.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/info/0/kenngaku), and [Senkyaku Banrai](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E8%B1%8A%E6%B4%B2%20%E5%8D%83%E5%AE%A2%E4%B8%87%E6%9D%A5%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E8%B1%8A%E6%B4%B26-5-1) next door has food stalls and a hot spring.

In recent winters, Odaiba Rainbow Fireworks have lit up the bay on Saturday evenings in December, short shows of a few minutes that you can see from all along the seaside. Notices for events like this often say 雨天決行・荒天中止: it goes ahead in rain but is cancelled in a storm. In summer, big outdoor music, beer and food festivals take over temporary grounds in Aomi and the parks.

- The seaside is windy all year. Bring a layer even after a warm day, and a lot more in winter.
- Winter fireworks are short. Be in place a few minutes early or you will miss them.

## Getting there and getting home

Two train lines serve the area. The Yurikamome is a driverless line from Shimbashi that loops over Rainbow Bridge and runs through Odaiba and Ariake to Toyosu; the front seats have the best view. The Rinkai Line runs from Osaki through Tokyo Teleport and Kokusai-Tenjijo to Shin-Kiba, and some trains run straight through from the JR Saikyo Line from Shibuya, Shinjuku and Ikebukuro. Toyosu is also on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line, and Tokyo BRT buses run from central Tokyo out to Ariake.

For Tokyo Big Sight, use [Kokusai-Tenjijo Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%8A%E3%82%93%E3%81%8B%E3%81%84%E7%B7%9A%20%E5%9B%BD%E9%9A%9B%E5%B1%95%E7%A4%BA%E5%A0%B4%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%98%8E2-5-25&query_place_id=ChIJmWxhsemJGGAR5ARhQg_Wthc) on the Rinkai Line, about seven minutes' walk, or [Tokyo Big Sight Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%86%E3%82%8A%E3%81%8B%E3%82%82%E3%82%81%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E3%83%93%E3%83%83%E3%82%B0%E3%82%B5%E3%82%A4%E3%83%88%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%98%8E3-6-15&query_place_id=ChIJ21Z9sOeJGGARdN8dU-X15ak) on the Yurikamome, about three. Tokyo Garden Theater is a few minutes from [Ariake Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%86%E3%82%8A%E3%81%8B%E3%82%82%E3%82%81%20%E6%9C%89%E6%98%8E%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%98%8E3-7-5&query_place_id=ChIJBcUUKuiJGGARSXSkBPZswfw) on the Yurikamome. Ariake Arena is about eight minutes from [Shin-Toyosu](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%86%E3%82%8A%E3%81%8B%E3%82%82%E3%82%81%20%E6%96%B0%E8%B1%8A%E6%B4%B2%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B1%9F%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E8%B1%8A%E6%B4%B26-2-20&query_place_id=ChIJtTOYbZeJGGARdf8WMX18pBM) or Ariake-Tennis-no-Mori on the Yurikamome. Toyota Arena Tokyo is a few minutes from Aomi (Yurikamome) or Tokyo Teleport (Rinkai), and teamLab Planets sits right by Shin-Toyosu Station.

- The Yurikamome has small trains. On big event days it is often faster to walk a few extra minutes to a Rinkai Line station.
- Fares on both bay lines are higher than on JR, so a day pass can pay off if you hop around.

## Questions people ask

**How do I get to Tokyo Big Sight?**
Take the Rinkai Line to Kokusai-Tenjijo, about a seven-minute walk, or the Yurikamome to Tokyo Big Sight Station, about three minutes. On big convention days, leave early, as both lines fill up in the morning.

**Is the Gundam statue still in Odaiba?**
The life-size Unicorn Gundam outside DiverCity Tokyo Plaza ended its display at the end of August 2026, after about nine years. Check the official Gundam pages for news of anything that replaces it.

**What should I wear to teamLab Planets?**
Trousers you can roll up above the knee, or shorts, since you walk barefoot through water. Skirts are not ideal because some rooms have mirrored floors.

**Are there fireworks in Odaiba in winter?**
In recent years, yes: short shows on Saturday evenings in December, visible from the seaside for free. They do not run every year, so check the official page for the current season.

**Is it hard to get home after a concert in Ariake?**
It can take a while, since everyone leaves at once on two small lines. Eat nearby and leave later, or walk to a Rinkai Line station such as Kokusai-Tenjijo or Shinonome.

**Is Odaiba worth visiting without an event?**
For a half day, yes: the beach and Rainbow Bridge at sunset, teamLab Planets and the night view, plus Miraikan once it reopens in spring 2027. It is quieter on weekdays.
