# Nakameguro, Ebisu and Daikanyama: river, beer and gigs

Things to do in Nakameguro, Ebisu and Daikanyama fit easily into one walk: three neighbouring districts just south of Shibuya, each a stop or two apart. Nakameguro is the river with its cherry trees and cafés, Daikanyama is a grid of low-rise shopping streets around a large bookstore, and Ebisu is beer, izakaya and Ebisu Garden Place, with some of Tokyo's best-known live venues in between. The list below is updated daily with events in and around all three.

## Three neighbourhoods, one easy walk

Nakameguro, in Meguro ward, grew up along the [Meguro River](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E7%9B%AE%E9%BB%92%E5%B7%9D%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E7%9B%AE%E9%BB%92%E5%8C%BA%E4%B8%8A%E7%9B%AE%E9%BB%921%E4%B8%81%E7%9B%AE), a narrow, canal-like waterway lined with cherry trees, small cafés, bars and clothing shops. It is quiet on weekday mornings and busy on weekend afternoons, and in spring it becomes one of the most crowded places in the city. Daikanyama, on the hill to the north in Shibuya ward, is calmer: low buildings, independent boutiques, galleries and [Daikanyama T-Site](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E4%BB%A3%E5%AE%98%E5%B1%B1T-SITE%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%8B%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%BA%E7%8C%BF%E6%A5%BD%E7%94%BA16-15), home of a large Tsutaya bookstore.

Ebisu, a short walk east of Daikanyama, is named after Yebisu beer, first brewed here in 1890; brewing moved away in 1988 and returned in 2024. The streets around the station are packed with izakaya, standing bars and small restaurants, and a moving walkway from the East Exit leads to [Ebisu Garden Place](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%81%B5%E6%AF%94%E5%AF%BF%E3%82%AC%E3%83%BC%E3%83%87%E3%83%B3%E3%83%97%E3%83%AC%E3%82%A4%E3%82%B9%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%8B%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%BA%E6%81%B5%E6%AF%94%E5%AF%BF4-20), a large complex built on the old brewery site. Most events here are small and local: markets, gallery openings, gigs and, in winter, illuminations.

## Cherry blossoms on the Meguro River

The Meguro River is lined with cherry trees for several kilometres, and the stretch around Nakameguro Station is the most famous: branches meet over the water, and pink lanterns are hung along the banks. Bloom usually falls in late March or early April. In recent years the trees near the station have been lit up in the evening, and on a weekend near full bloom the local Nakameguro Sakura Matsuri has run food stalls by the river.

This is a place for walking, not sitting. Picnic sheets and street parties along the river are not allowed, and at peak times staff ask people to keep moving and not stop on the bridges for photos. Weekday mornings are the calmest time; after dark on a full-bloom weekend the paths are shoulder to shoulder. If it gets too much, walk upstream towards [Ikejiri-Ohashi](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E6%80%A5%E7%94%B0%E5%9C%92%E9%83%BD%E5%B8%82%E7%B7%9A%20%E6%B1%A0%E5%B0%BB%E5%A4%A7%E6%A9%8B%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%96%E7%94%B0%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%BA%E6%B1%A0%E5%B0%BB3-2), where the crowd thins out.

- Take photos from the banks, not the middle of a bridge, and keep walking.
- Riverside cafés fill up fast in bloom season. Buy a drink to go and carry your rubbish home.
- Coin lockers at Nakameguro Station fill early on spring weekends. Travel light.

## Ebisu Garden Place, beer and winter lights

[YEBISU BREWERY TOKYO](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=YEBISU%20BREWERY%20TOKYO%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%8B%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%BA%E6%81%B5%E6%AF%94%E5%AF%BF4-20-1) opened at Ebisu Garden Place in 2024, replacing the old beer museum. Beer is brewed on site, and there is a free self-guided history area, guided tasting tours that you book online and a taproom. It is closed on Tuesdays and payment inside is cashless only. The same complex holds the [Tokyo Photographic Art Museum](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%86%99%E7%9C%9F%E7%BE%8E%E8%A1%93%E9%A4%A8%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E7%9B%AE%E9%BB%92%E5%8C%BA%E4%B8%89%E7%94%B01-13-3) (closed on Mondays), a small cinema, [The Garden Hall](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%B6%E3%83%BB%E3%82%AC%E3%83%BC%E3%83%87%E3%83%B3%E3%83%9B%E3%83%BC%E3%83%AB%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E7%9B%AE%E9%BB%92%E5%8C%BA%E4%B8%89%E7%94%B01-13-2) for concerts and a market on some Sundays.

In winter Ebisu Garden Place is one of Tokyo's classic illumination spots. In recent years a huge Baccarat chandelier has been set up in the central square from mid-November into January, with lights and a Christmas market around it. The Meguro River has a winter display too, but not the one older blogs describe: the blue LED “Blue Cave” lit the Nakameguro stretch in 2014 and is no longer held there. In recent winters the river's illumination has been a pink display further downstream between Gotanda and Osaki.

- Tours at YEBISU BREWERY TOKYO can fill up on weekends. Book a few days ahead.
- Weekend evenings before Christmas are the busiest time at the chandelier. Weekday evenings are easier.

## Daikanyama T-Site, the flea market and live venues

[Daikanyama T-Site](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E4%BB%A3%E5%AE%98%E5%B1%B1T-SITE%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%8B%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%BA%E7%8C%BF%E6%A5%BD%E7%94%BA16-15) is three low buildings around the Tsutaya bookstore, with a café, magazines from around the world and a garden path that hosts small events. It also holds the Daikanyama Flea Market (代官山 蚤の市), which has been held more than twenty times: two days of antiques, old tableware, vintage clothes and food trucks spread across the site. Entry is free, numbered tickets are sometimes handed out for the first entrants on the busiest day, and whether sellers take cards depends on the stall.

For music, this is one of the best corners of Tokyo. [LIQUIDROOM](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=LIQUIDROOM%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%8B%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%BA%E6%9D%B13-16-6&query_place_id=ChIJxTAYVt3gGGARc6fo_RMKO5I) near Ebisu Station is a long-running club and live hall for rock, electronic and international acts, and [UNIT](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E4%BB%A3%E5%AE%98%E5%B1%B1UNIT%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%8B%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%BA%E6%81%B5%E6%AF%94%E5%AF%BF%E8%A5%BF1-34-17) in Daikanyama runs gigs and club nights in a basement. [Blue Note Place](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=BLUE%20NOTE%20PLACE%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%8B%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%BA%E6%81%B5%E6%AF%94%E5%AF%BF4-20-4&query_place_id=ChIJ-eMeULeLGGARAciOIhznbPQ) at Ebisu Garden Place is a restaurant and bar with live music. At live venues the usual rules apply: tickets through e+, Pia or the venue, an entry number on your ticket, and a drink charge at the door.

- Bring cash to the flea market. Some stalls take cards, many do not.
- The flea market decides on rain the day before and posts it on the [T-Site page](https://store.tsite.jp/daikanyama/english/) and social media.
- Shows at LIQUIDROOM and UNIT often start around 7pm. Check the end time against your last train.

## Getting there and planning a day

[Nakameguro Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E6%80%A5%E6%9D%B1%E6%A8%AA%E7%B7%9A%20%E4%B8%AD%E7%9B%AE%E9%BB%92%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E7%9B%AE%E9%BB%92%E5%8C%BA%E4%B8%8A%E7%9B%AE%E9%BB%923-4-1) is on the Tokyu Toyoko Line and the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line. [Daikanyama Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E6%80%A5%E6%9D%B1%E6%A8%AA%E7%B7%9A%20%E4%BB%A3%E5%AE%98%E5%B1%B1%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%8B%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%BA%E4%BB%A3%E5%AE%98%E5%B1%B1%E7%94%BA19-4) is the stop between Shibuya and Nakameguro on the Toyoko Line, a few minutes from Shibuya, and T-Site is about five minutes from it on foot. [Ebisu Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=JR%20%E6%81%B5%E6%AF%94%E5%AF%BF%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%8B%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%BA%E6%81%B5%E6%AF%94%E5%AF%BF%E5%8D%971-5-5&query_place_id=ChIJHffjRkCLGGAR304p75Idq4U) is on the JR Yamanote, Saikyo and Shonan-Shinjuku lines and the Hibiya Line; Ebisu Garden Place is about five minutes from the East Exit along the Skywalk. The three areas are an easy walk from each other, mostly downhill from Daikanyama to the river.

A good day here: browse Daikanyama in the late morning, walk down to Nakameguro for lunch by the river, then cross to Ebisu for the brewery, a gallery or a gig, and finish in an izakaya near the station. Shibuya is one stop away, and Harajuku and Roppongi are a short ride if you want more for the evening.
