# Kabuki, noh and rakugo in Tokyo

Tokyo is the easiest place in Japan to see the traditional stage: kabuki plays most days of most months at [Kabukiza](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%AD%8C%E8%88%9E%E4%BC%8E%E5%BA%A7%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A74-12-15) in Ginza, noh and kyogen have their own quiet theatres, and small yose halls run rakugo storytelling from midday into the evening. You don't need Japanese for most of it, and some of the best experiences come with the cheapest tickets. The list below is updated daily with kabuki runs, noh programmes, rakugo nights and other traditional shows.

## Kabuki at Kabukiza

Kabukiza in Ginza is the main home of kabuki, run by the Shochiku company. It was rebuilt in 2013 with an office tower behind the old-style facade, and [Higashi-Ginza Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E3%83%A1%E3%83%88%E3%83%AD%E6%97%A5%E6%AF%94%E8%B0%B7%E7%B7%9A%20%E6%9D%B1%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A7%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A74-12-15) (Hibiya and Toei Asakusa lines) connects straight into its basement. In most months a new programme opens early in the month and runs for a few weeks. Each day is split into two or three parts (bu), each a few hours long with intervals, and a ticket covers one part.

A part usually mixes a history play, a dance and a domestic drama, often one famous scene from a longer story, so a short plot summary beforehand helps a lot. The theatre rents small screens with English captions that explain what is happening as it happens. Full tickets sell on [Shochiku's ticket site](https://www.kabukiweb.net/about/ticket/), which has an English version, and good seats for popular months and big-name actors go quickly.

- Eating is part of the day: buy a bento in the theatre and eat it at your seat during the interval, never while the curtain is up.
- Even without a ticket you can browse the souvenir shops in the basement and go up to the small rooftop garden.

## Single-act seats and other kabuki stages

If a whole part feels like a lot, take a single-act seat (makumi, often called hitomakumi) on the fourth floor of Kabukiza. You watch one play, which can be half an hour or well over an hour, for a fraction of the full price. In recent years most of these seats have gone [on sale online](https://www.kabukiweb.net/about/ticket/) from noon the day before, with a smaller number sold at the theatre on the day for cash. The view is high and far back, so opera glasses help, but the sound and the shouts from the regulars are the real thing.

Kabuki is also staged at [Shinbashi Enbujo](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%96%B0%E6%A9%8B%E6%BC%94%E8%88%9E%E5%A0%B4%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A76-18-2), a few minutes' walk from Kabukiza, and at [Meijiza](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%98%8E%E6%B2%BB%E5%BA%A7%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E6%97%A5%E6%9C%AC%E6%A9%8B%E6%B5%9C%E7%94%BA2-31-1) in Nihonbashi Hamacho, in some months alongside other productions. The National Theatre near Hanzomon, long the place for full-length classics and beginner programmes, closed in late 2023 for rebuilding and is not expected to reopen before the 2030s. Its kabuki runs continue in borrowed halls, recently including the [New National Theatre](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%96%B0%E5%9B%BD%E7%AB%8B%E5%8A%87%E5%A0%B4%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%8B%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%AC%E7%94%BA1-1-1) in Hatsudai, so check the venue on each listing.

- Check how long your act runs before buying. Some are short dances, others are long dramas.
- Single-act holders stay on the fourth floor and leave between acts, so buy each act you want separately.

## Noh, kyogen and bunraku

Noh is the older, slower art: masked actors, a chorus and a small ensemble of flute and drums on a bare cypress stage. A programme usually lasts a couple of hours and pairs noh plays with kyogen, short comic pieces about everyday life that are much easier to follow. The [National Noh Theatre](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E5%9B%BD%E7%AB%8B%E8%83%BD%E6%A5%BD%E5%A0%82%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%8B%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%BA%E5%8D%83%E9%A7%84%E3%83%B6%E8%B0%B74-18-1), a short walk from Sendagaya Station, has small screens in the back of each seat with English or Japanese subtitles, which makes it the best place to start. The [Kanze Noh Theatre](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E8%A6%B3%E4%B8%96%E8%83%BD%E6%A5%BD%E5%A0%82%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A76-10-1) is in the basement of Ginza Six in Ginza, and the [Cerulean Tower Noh Theatre](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%BB%E3%83%AB%E3%83%AA%E3%82%A2%E3%83%B3%E3%82%BF%E3%83%AF%E3%83%BC%E8%83%BD%E6%A5%BD%E5%A0%82%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%8B%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%BA%E6%A1%9C%E4%B8%98%E7%94%BA26-1) is in Shibuya.

Bunraku is puppet theatre. Each large puppet is worked by three puppeteers in full view, while a narrator (tayu) voices every role to a shamisen. Its home is the National Bunraku Theatre in Osaka, and the company usually comes to Tokyo for several runs a year. While the National Theatre is closed, these runs move between other halls, so they are easy to miss unless you watch the list.

- Noh is slow and quiet on purpose. Keep still and keep your phone fully off.
- Many noh tickets are sold by the performers' groups, sometimes only in Japanese. The National Noh Theatre has [an English page](https://www.ntj.jac.go.jp/en/theatre/noh/).

## Rakugo and the yose halls

Rakugo is comic storytelling for one person: a performer in kimono kneels on a cushion and plays every character with only a fan and a hand towel as props. The place to hear it is a yose, a small variety hall. Tokyo has four that run almost every day of the year: [Suzumoto Engeijo](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E9%88%B4%E6%9C%AC%E6%BC%94%E8%8A%B8%E5%A0%B4%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8F%B0%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E4%B8%8A%E9%87%8E2-7-12) in Ueno, [Asakusa Engei Hall](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%B5%85%E8%8D%89%E6%BC%94%E8%8A%B8%E3%83%9B%E3%83%BC%E3%83%AB%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8F%B0%E6%9D%B1%E5%8C%BA%E6%B5%85%E8%8D%891-43-12) in the Asakusa Rokku entertainment street, [Shinjuku Suehirotei](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF%E6%9C%AB%E5%BB%A3%E4%BA%AD%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF%E5%8C%BA%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF3-6-12) near Shinjuku-sanchome Station (the last wooden yose building in Tokyo), and [Ikebukuro Engeijo](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B%E6%BC%94%E8%8A%B8%E5%A0%B4%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E8%B1%8A%E5%B3%B6%E5%8C%BA%E8%A5%BF%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B1-23-1) near Ikebukuro Station. The National Engei Hall closed together with the National Theatre.

A yose is the easiest traditional show to just walk into. Regular programmes need no booking: you pay at the door, sit anywhere and can come in or leave between acts. The line-up changes every ten days, and the afternoon and evening shows mix many short rakugo sets with iromono, the variety acts in between, such as manzai double acts, magic, juggling and paper cutting. The stories are in Japanese, but the variety acts work for anyone.

For English, the Oedo English Rakugo Show is held in Asakusa from time to time, and a few performers tell stories in English or in two languages at small venues around the city. These shows appear in the list when they are announced.

- Bring cash for the door. Small halls may not take cards.
- The last performer of each show (the tori) is the headliner, so the final hour is often the best.

## Etiquette and practical tips

There is no dress code at any of these theatres. Some women wear kimono to kabuki, especially on opening days, but jeans are fine. Switch your phone fully off, not just to silent, and don't take photos or video of the stage. At kabuki you will hear regulars shout an actor's house name (yago) at key moments. Enjoy it, but leave it to them. The figures in black on stage (kurogo) are stagehands you are meant to treat as invisible.

Big kabuki names and New Year programmes sell out, while yose and most noh shows rarely do. Many shows run in the afternoon, so they make a good plan for a rainy day. Leave large bags in a coin locker at the station: seats are close together.

## Questions people ask

**Can I enjoy kabuki without understanding Japanese?**
Yes. Kabukiza rents small screens with English captions, and the music, costumes and stagecraft carry a lot on their own. A short plot summary before you go helps.

**What is the cheapest way to see kabuki in Tokyo?**
A single-act seat on the fourth floor of Kabukiza. In recent years most of them have been sold online from noon the day before, plus a few at the theatre on the day.

**How long is a kabuki performance?**
Each part of the day's programme usually lasts a few hours, including intervals. A single act can run from about half an hour to well over an hour.

**Is the National Theatre of Japan open?**
No. It closed in late 2023 for rebuilding, and its kabuki, bunraku and other programmes are staged in other Tokyo halls for now.

**Do I need to book tickets for rakugo?**
Not for the regular programmes at yose halls. You pay at the door, sit where you like and can arrive or leave between acts.

**Is there rakugo in English in Tokyo?**
Yes, now and then. The Oedo English Rakugo Show is held in Asakusa from time to time, and other English shows appear in our list when announced.
