# K-pop in Tokyo

Japan is K-pop's biggest market outside Korea, and Tokyo sees it all: dome and stadium tours, fan meetings, Japanese-language singles with release events, and a Korea Town in [Shin-Okubo](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=JR%20%E6%96%B0%E5%A4%A7%E4%B9%85%E4%BF%9D%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF%E5%8C%BA%E7%99%BE%E4%BA%BA%E7%94%BA1-10-15&query_place_id=ChIJKUnkNy-NGGARRdVS60w64HA) where fans shop, eat and celebrate idols' birthdays. The rules are Japanese, which surprises fans used to other countries. The list below is updated daily with K-pop concerts, fan events and pop-ups.

## What K-pop looks like in Tokyo

The biggest groups play [Tokyo Dome](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E3%83%89%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A0%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%96%87%E4%BA%AC%E5%8C%BA%E5%BE%8C%E6%A5%BD1-3-61), [Belluna Dome](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%83%99%E3%83%AB%E3%83%BC%E3%83%8A%E3%83%89%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A0%20%E5%9F%BC%E7%8E%89%E7%9C%8C%E6%89%80%E6%B2%A2%E5%B8%82%E4%B8%8A%E5%B1%B1%E5%8F%A32135) in Saitama, Nissan Stadium in Yokohama and the Japan National Stadium, and many tour Japan separately from their world tours, with Japanese-language songs in the set. Arenas such as Saitama Super Arena, Ariake Arena and [K-Arena Yokohama](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=K%E3%82%A2%E3%83%AA%E3%83%BC%E3%83%8A%E6%A8%AA%E6%B5%9C%20%E7%A5%9E%E5%A5%88%E5%B7%9D%E7%9C%8C%E6%A8%AA%E6%B5%9C%E5%B8%82%E8%A5%BF%E5%8C%BA%E3%81%BF%E3%81%AA%E3%81%A8%E3%81%BF%E3%82%89%E3%81%846-2-14&query_place_id=ChIJ6Te0zGZdGGARg8sCj6TN9rQ) host the next tier and many fan meetings (ファンミーティング), which mix talk, games and a few songs. Multi-group events come too: [KCON JAPAN](https://kconjapan.com/) takes over [Makuhari Messe](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E5%B9%95%E5%BC%B5%E3%83%A1%E3%83%83%E3%82%BB%20%E5%8D%83%E8%91%89%E7%9C%8C%E5%8D%83%E8%91%89%E5%B8%82%E7%BE%8E%E6%B5%9C%E5%8C%BA%E4%B8%AD%E7%80%AC2-1) in Chiba each spring, and Korean TV music shows have held big Japan editions.

Japan also has its own branch of K-pop. Groups such as NiziU (JYP with Sony Music) and &TEAM (HYBE's Japanese label) were formed for the Japanese market, and many Korean groups release Japanese singles. Those releases often come with release events (リリースイベント): you buy the CD, which carries a serial code or an entry ticket, and enter a lottery for a hi-touch, a photo session or a mini live. The more copies, the more entries, which is why charts here can look strange.

## Tickets: the Japanese fan club comes first

For a Japan tour, the best chance usually goes through the group's Japanese official fan club, which is separate from the Korean or global membership. Japan fan clubs run the first lotteries, and you often need to join before a set date to apply. After that come lotteries on the ticket sites, and only sometimes a first come, first served general sale. Most accounts need a Japanese phone number and address, which is the main barrier for overseas fans.

Tickets for big K-pop shows are almost always named and checked at the door against photo ID, and some tours use face registration. Buying a ticket in someone else's name, or from a stranger on social media, often ends at the entrance. Our tickets guide explains lotteries, konbini payment, e-ticket apps and official resale step by step.

- Watch the Japanese official site and X account of the group, not only the Korean ones. Japan dates are announced there.
- Lotteries run a few days at most. Note the application window, the result date and the payment deadline.

## At the show: lightsticks, banners and phones

Bring the official lightstick. At most big shows you pair it with the group's app and enter your seat before the concert, and the venue then controls the colours so the whole hall moves together. Unofficial or old models may not sync, and some shows ask you not to use other lights. Paper fans (うちわ) and small banners are part of fandom in Japan, but they usually have size limits and must stay at chest height so the people behind can see.

Photos and filming are usually banned at K-pop shows in Japan, as at most Japanese concerts, and staff will stop you, even if you have seen fancams from shows in other countries. If a song or the whole show is open for phones, it is announced. Arena and dome rules apply as well: no re-entry, merch queues hours before doors, and a regulated exit by block at the end, so check your last train home.

- Charge the lightstick and update the app the day before. Pairing at the venue is slow when 50,000 people try at once.
- Learn the official fan chant (응원법) if the group has one. Japanese crowds follow it closely.

## Shin-Okubo, Tokyo's Korea Town

Shin-Okubo sits one stop north of Shinjuku on the JR Yamanote Line, and the streets around the station are packed with idol goods shops, Korean cosmetics, supermarkets and restaurants. The main strip is [Okubo-dori](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E5%A4%A7%E4%B9%85%E4%BF%9D%E9%80%9A%E3%82%8A%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF%E5%8C%BA%E7%99%BE%E4%BA%BA%E7%94%BA1%E4%B8%81%E7%9B%AE), lined with posters of idols and actors, while the narrow lanes towards [Shokuan-dori](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E8%81%B7%E5%AE%89%E9%80%9A%E3%82%8A%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF%E5%8C%BA%E5%A4%A7%E4%B9%85%E4%BF%9D1%E4%B8%81%E7%9B%AE) hold the street food: cheese hot dogs, Korean fried chicken, hotteok and grilled pork belly. Shops sell albums, photocards and goods; some items are official and some are not, so check before you pay a premium.

Weekends and school holidays are very busy and the station is small, with a single exit, so the platform can back up. Weekday mornings are calmer, though many shops open late morning. [Higashi-Shinjuku](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E9%83%BD%E5%96%B6%E5%A4%A7%E6%B1%9F%E6%88%B8%E7%B7%9A%20%E6%9D%B1%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF%E5%8C%BA%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF7-27-3) and [Okubo](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=JR%20%E5%A4%A7%E4%B9%85%E4%BF%9D%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF%E5%8C%BA%E7%99%BE%E4%BA%BA%E7%94%BA1-17-1) stations are within a short walk if Shin-Okubo is crowded.

- Carry some cash. Most shops take cards or IC cards, but small food stands may not.
- Eat on the spot or at the stall. Walking while eating is frowned upon and bins are few, so keep your trash.

## Birthday cafés, collab cafés and pop-up stores

A big part of fandom happens in cafés. For an idol's birthday, fans rent a café and run a birthday event (センイル, from the Korean word for birthday): photos and decorations on the walls, and with each drink you get cup holders, photocards or stickers made by the fans. Shin-Okubo and Harajuku have cafés that host these events again and again. Popular ones need a reservation, often through LINE with a QR code posted on the café's X account, so check that first.

Official pop-up stores open for new albums, anniversaries and tours, often in Shibuya, Harajuku or Shinjuku, and collab cafés tie in with groups or character lines. They work like other Tokyo pop-ups: reservations or numbered tickets on busy days, purchase limits per person, and bonus items for spending over a set amount.

- Search the idol's name in katakana plus センイル or カフェ on X to find this year's birthday events.
- Fan-made birthday freebies are gifts, not merch. Taking one set per person is the usual etiquette.

## Questions people ask

**Can foreigners get K-pop concert tickets in Japan?**
Yes, but it is easier with a Japanese phone number and address, because fan clubs and ticket sites verify accounts. Tickets are named and checked against your passport at the door.

**Do I need the Japanese fan club for K-pop tickets in Japan?**
Not always, but it usually gives the first and best lottery. The Japan fan club is separate from the Korean or global membership, and you often have to join before a deadline.

**Can I take photos at a K-pop concert in Japan?**
Usually not. Most shows in Japan ban photos and filming. If phones are allowed for certain songs, it is announced clearly.

**What is a K-pop birthday café?**
A fan-run event at a café to celebrate an idol's birthday, with decorations and free cup holders or photocards with drinks. They are announced on X, often with reservations through LINE.

**Where is Korea Town in Tokyo?**
Around [Shin-Okubo Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=JR%20%E6%96%B0%E5%A4%A7%E4%B9%85%E4%BF%9D%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF%E5%8C%BA%E7%99%BE%E4%BA%BA%E7%94%BA1-10-15&query_place_id=ChIJKUnkNy-NGGARRdVS60w64HA) on the JR Yamanote Line, one stop from Shinjuku. Okubo-dori and the lanes behind it are full of K-pop shops, cosmetics and Korean food.

**What is KCON JAPAN?**
A large K-pop convention and concert series held over several days at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, usually in spring, with many groups on one bill.
