# Ikebukuro: anime, Sunshine City and open-air stages

Ikebukuro is one of Tokyo's big station towns and the city's second anime capital after Akihabara, with a strong lean towards female fans. Around the station you also find a major concert hall, a rooftop aquarium, free open-air stages and neighbourhood festivals that most visitors never hear about. The list below is updated daily with events in and around the area.

## East side, west side: how Ikebukuro works

Ikebukuro Station is one of the busiest in Japan. It is served by the JR Yamanote, Saikyo and Shonan-Shinjuku lines, the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi, Yurakucho and Fukutoshin lines, the Seibu Ikebukuro Line and the Tobu Tojo Line. Locals love one quirk: the Seibu department store is on the east side and Tobu is on the west.

The two sides have different characters. Most events tell you which exit to use, and it is worth following.

- Choose your exit before you arrive. Crossing the station underground on a busy day can take ten minutes.
- Coin lockers inside the station fill up on weekends. Lockers near the outer exits and in big buildings are a backup.

## Sunshine City: halls, aquarium and Namjatown

Sunshine City is a short walk east of the station along Sunshine 60-dori, or a few minutes underground from [Higashi-Ikebukuro Station](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E3%83%A1%E3%83%88%E3%83%AD%E6%9C%89%E6%A5%BD%E7%94%BA%E7%B7%9A%20%E6%9D%B1%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B%E9%A7%85%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E8%B1%8A%E5%B3%B6%E5%8C%BA%E6%9D%B1%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B4-4-4) on the Yurakucho Line. It packs a lot into one complex. [Sunshine Aquarium](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%B5%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B7%E3%83%A3%E3%82%A4%E3%83%B3%E6%B0%B4%E6%97%8F%E9%A4%A8%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E8%B1%8A%E5%B3%B6%E5%8C%BA%E6%9D%B1%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B3-1) sits on the roof of the World Import Mart building, with outdoor tanks and seasonal special exhibitions, and the [Sunshine 60 Observatory Tenbou-Park](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%B5%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B7%E3%83%A3%E3%82%A4%E3%83%B360%E5%B1%95%E6%9C%9B%E5%8F%B0%20%E3%81%A6%E3%82%93%E3%81%BC%E3%81%86%E3%83%91%E3%83%BC%E3%82%AF%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E8%B1%8A%E5%B3%B6%E5%8C%BA%E6%9D%B1%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B3-1-1&query_place_id=ChIJEQo9F2-NGGARySiYS8C8FGM) looks out from the 60th floor, about 251 metres up. There is also the [Konica Minolta Planetarium Manten](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%B3%E3%83%8B%E3%82%AB%E3%83%9F%E3%83%8E%E3%83%AB%E3%82%BF%E3%83%97%E3%83%A9%E3%83%8D%E3%82%BF%E3%83%AA%E3%82%A6%E3%83%A0%E6%BA%80%E5%A4%A9%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E8%B1%8A%E5%B3%B6%E5%8C%BA%E6%9D%B1%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B3-1-3&query_place_id=ChIJZ9BjRm6NGGARptrQGlzqwJc), the Sunshine Theatre for stage plays, and exhibition halls that host anime exhibitions, hobby and fan markets and trade shows.

[Namjatown](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%83%8A%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B8%E3%83%A3%E3%82%BF%E3%82%A6%E3%83%B3%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E8%B1%8A%E5%B3%B6%E5%8C%BA%E6%9D%B1%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B3-1-3), Bandai Namco's indoor theme park with a gyoza food court, runs anime collaborations every few months, with themed food and bonus items. [Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%83%9D%E3%82%B1%E3%83%A2%E3%83%B3%E3%82%BB%E3%83%B3%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A1%E3%82%AC%E3%83%88%E3%82%A6%E3%82%AD%E3%83%A7%E3%83%BC%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E8%B1%8A%E5%B3%B6%E5%8C%BA%E6%9D%B1%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B3-1-2) and the Pikachu Sweets café are in the same complex, and the Fountain Plaza in the basement of the Alpa mall is used for small stage events. In summer the complex has held its own bon odori dance for more than 40 years, and visitors are welcome to join the circle.

- The aquarium and observatory are calmest on weekday mornings. On rainy weekends they fill up fast.

## Otome Road, Animate and collab cafés

[Otome Road](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E4%B9%99%E5%A5%B3%E3%83%AD%E3%83%BC%E3%83%89%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E8%B1%8A%E5%B3%B6%E5%8C%BA%E6%9D%B1%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B3%E4%B8%81%E7%9B%AE) is the street along the west side of Sunshine City, beside the elevated expressway, lined with shops for doujinshi, character goods and voice actor merchandise aimed mostly at female fans. [Animate's flagship store](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%A2%E3%83%8B%E3%83%A1%E3%82%A4%E3%83%88%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B%E6%9C%AC%E5%BA%97%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E8%B1%8A%E5%B3%B6%E5%8C%BA%E6%9D%B1%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B1-20-7&query_place_id=ChIJi0VhQ2-NGGARGsbajebyPVA) is near the station's east exit, with several floors of goods and its own event spaces, and the area also has official stores for series such as Evangelion.

Ikebukuro probably has more collab cafés than any other part of Tokyo. Animate, Capcom, GiGO and several collab café chains run cafés here whose themes change every few weeks, each with themed menus, random bonus goods and booking by time slot for popular titles. Fans swap duplicate bonus items right after buying them, and this trading is part of the scene.

- Trade bonus goods away from shop doors and stairways. Shops dislike crowds blocking the entrance.
- New releases often have a limit per person. Read the sign at the shelf before you pile up a basket.

## Festivals and cosplay through the year

The biggest date is the [Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Festival](https://ikebukurocosplay.jp/en/), held over a few days around the end of October. Streets and parks on the east side and Sunshine City become cosplay areas, with the main stage in [Naka-Ikebukuro Park](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E4%B8%AD%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B%E5%85%AC%E5%9C%92%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E8%B1%8A%E5%B3%B6%E5%8C%BA%E6%9D%B1%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B1-16-1). Cosplayers buy a registration ticket that includes the official changing rooms, and arriving or leaving in costume is not allowed. Watching in normal clothes is free, and in recent years there has also been an evening session for adults only.

Ikebukuro also has its own local festivals. Fukuro Matsuri, the neighbourhood's autumn festival, fills the area around the west exit in late September, and in October Tokyo Yosakoi brings dance teams to Ikebukuro West Gate Park and other stages around the ward. A short walk south, [Zoshigaya Kishimojin](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E9%9B%91%E5%8F%B8%E3%83%B6%E8%B0%B7%E9%AC%BC%E5%AD%90%E6%AF%8D%E7%A5%9E%E5%A0%82%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E8%B1%8A%E5%B3%B6%E5%8C%BA%E9%9B%91%E5%8F%B8%E3%81%8C%E8%B0%B73-15-20) temple hosts the Tezukuri-ichi handmade market on the third Sunday of most months, with makers selling ceramics, textiles and small crafts under the old trees. It takes a break in August and is called off in rain.

- Cosplay registration tickets for the Halloween festival go on sale weeks ahead. Book early if you plan to dress up.
- Tezukuri-ichi posts rain cancellations on its X account by 7am on the day.
- At the Halloween Cosplay Festival, taking photos of cosplayers with a camera needs a photographer registration ticket. Quick phone snaps as you pass by do not.

## West exit: theatre, concerts and an evening out

The [Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E8%8A%B8%E8%A1%93%E5%8A%87%E5%A0%B4%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E8%B1%8A%E5%B3%B6%E5%8C%BA%E8%A5%BF%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B1-8-1), opened by the city in 1990, is right by the west exit. Its Concert Hall is one of the main halls for orchestras in Tokyo, and the Playhouse, Theatre East and Theatre West stage drama, dance and opera. Next door, Ikebukuro West Gate Park has the [Global Ring Theatre](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%B0%E3%83%AD%E3%83%BC%E3%83%90%E3%83%AB%E3%83%AA%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B0%E3%82%B7%E3%82%A2%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC%20%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B%E8%A5%BF%E5%8F%A3%E5%85%AC%E5%9C%92%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E8%B1%8A%E5%B3%B6%E5%8C%BA%E8%A5%BF%E6%B1%A0%E8%A2%8B1-8-26&query_place_id=ChIJkZ1QEW6NGGARihgGBNnZbzw), an open-air stage where Toshima ward runs free concerts through the year, from violin recitals to orchestras, along with street culture and folk performance days. Free does not always mean walk-in, so check whether seats need booking.

Ikebukuro stays lively late, with plenty of cheap restaurants, small live houses and karaoke around both exits. The last trains leave around midnight, earlier on some private lines. For a calm side trip, the Tokyo Sakura Tram, the last surviving line of the old Toden streetcars, stops near Sunshine City and runs through Zoshigaya. Akihabara is the place for a second anime day.
