# Ginza, Yurakucho and Hibiya: events and tips

Ginza is Tokyo's polished shopping district, but it is also one of the densest event areas in the city: [Kabukiza](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%AD%8C%E8%88%9E%E4%BC%8E%E5%BA%A7%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A74-12-15), dozens of free galleries and department store fairs, and next door in Yurakucho and Hibiya, concert halls, theatres and a big park. Everything sits within about a 15-minute walk, so one ticket easily turns into a whole afternoon. The list below is updated daily with what is on in and around the area.

## Three neighbourhoods side by side

Ginza runs for eight blocks (chome) along Chuo-dori, lined with department stores, flagship shops and small galleries tucked into upper floors. Kabukiza stands on Harumi-dori at the Higashi-Ginza end. Yurakucho, by the JR tracks to the west, is more casual: izakaya and yakitori bars under the railway arches, the [Tokyo International Forum](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E5%9B%BD%E9%9A%9B%E3%83%95%E3%82%A9%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A9%E3%83%A0%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8D%83%E4%BB%A3%E7%94%B0%E5%8C%BA%E4%B8%B8%E3%81%AE%E5%86%853-5-1), and [Yurakucho Marui](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9C%89%E6%A5%BD%E7%94%BA%E3%83%9E%E3%83%AB%E3%82%A4%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8D%83%E4%BB%A3%E7%94%B0%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%A5%BD%E7%94%BA2-7-1), whose event floor hosts a steady run of anime and character pop-ups.

Hibiya, just south of the Imperial Palace moat, is Tokyo's theatre district. The [Tokyo Takarazuka Theater](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E5%AE%9D%E5%A1%9A%E5%8A%87%E5%A0%B4%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8D%83%E4%BB%A3%E7%94%B0%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%A5%BD%E7%94%BA1-1-3), home of the all-female Takarazuka Revue, the [Nissay Theatre](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%97%A5%E7%94%9F%E5%8A%87%E5%A0%B4%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8D%83%E4%BB%A3%E7%94%B0%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%A5%BD%E7%94%BA1-1-1) and [Theatre Creation](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%B7%E3%82%A2%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC%E3%82%AF%E3%83%AA%E3%82%A8%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8D%83%E4%BB%A3%E7%94%B0%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%A5%BD%E7%94%BA1-2-1) are all within a few minutes of each other, with [Tokyo Midtown Hibiya](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E3%83%9F%E3%83%83%E3%83%89%E3%82%BF%E3%82%A6%E3%83%B3%E6%97%A5%E6%AF%94%E8%B0%B7%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8D%83%E4%BB%A3%E7%94%B0%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%A5%BD%E7%94%BA1-1-2) and [Hibiya Park](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%97%A5%E6%AF%94%E8%B0%B7%E5%85%AC%E5%9C%92%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8D%83%E4%BB%A3%E7%94%B0%E5%8C%BA%E6%97%A5%E6%AF%94%E8%B0%B7%E5%85%AC%E5%9C%921-6) across the road. The Imperial Theatre, long the home of big musicals, closed in February 2025 for rebuilding and is not expected back until around 2030.

On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, Chuo-dori becomes a pedestrian street (hokosha tengoku) for about 1.1 km from Ginza 1-chome to 8-chome. It starts at noon and runs into the early evening, a little longer in summer than in winter, and the police can call it off at short notice in bad weather. It is the easiest way to see Ginza: walk down the middle of the road and duck into whatever looks interesting.

- The car-free street is off on some holidays such as New Year's Day. If it matters to your plan, check the day before.
- Department stores open around 10 or 11am. The quietest time to browse is a weekday morning.

## Kabuki, noh and the stage

[Kabukiza](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%AD%8C%E8%88%9E%E4%BC%8E%E5%BA%A7%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A74-12-15) is the main home of kabuki, and Higashi-Ginza Station (Hibiya and Toei Asakusa lines) connects straight into its basement. If a full programme feels like too much, [single-act seats](https://www.kabukiweb.net/theatres/kabukiza/) (hitomakumi) on the fourth floor let you watch one play for a fraction of the price. Even without a ticket you can browse Kobikicho Hiroba, the souvenir and snack floor in the basement. [Shinbashi Enbujo](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%96%B0%E6%A9%8B%E6%BC%94%E8%88%9E%E5%A0%B4%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A76-18-2), a few minutes' walk away, also stages kabuki in some months.

For noh, the [Kanze Noh Theatre](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E8%A6%B3%E4%B8%96%E8%83%BD%E6%A5%BD%E5%A0%82%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A76-10-1) sits three floors below ground in [Ginza Six](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=GINZA%20SIX%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A76-10-1&query_place_id=ChIJAQAsR--LGGAR_AmB8WMDy88), a modern hall for one of the oldest schools of noh. Music is close by too. The Tokyo International Forum holds thousands in Hall A for concerts and musicals, and most years in Golden Week it hosts La Folle Journée, a big classical music festival with short, cheap concerts. [Oji Hall](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E7%8E%8B%E5%AD%90%E3%83%9B%E3%83%BC%E3%83%AB%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A74-7-5) in Ginza 4-chome is a small hall known for chamber music.

## Galleries, department stores and pop-ups

Ginza has more commercial galleries than almost anywhere in Japan, and many cost nothing. [Shiseido Gallery](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E8%B3%87%E7%94%9F%E5%A0%82%E3%82%AE%E3%83%A3%E3%83%A9%E3%83%AA%E3%83%BC%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A78-8-3), opened in 1919 and said to be the oldest existing gallery in the country, is in the basement of the Shiseido building. [Pola Museum Annex](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%83%9D%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A9%20%E3%83%9F%E3%83%A5%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B8%E3%82%A2%E3%83%A0%20%E3%82%A2%E3%83%8D%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF%E3%82%B9%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A71-7-7) is free too, and fashion houses such as [Maison Hermes](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A7%E3%83%A1%E3%82%BE%E3%83%B3%E3%82%A8%E3%83%AB%E3%83%A1%E3%82%B9%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A75-4-1) run serious art spaces on their upper floors. [Ginza Tsutaya Books](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A7%20%E8%94%A6%E5%B1%8B%E6%9B%B8%E5%BA%97%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A76-10-1) in Ginza Six is an art-themed bookshop with its own exhibitions, and the free rooftop garden of Ginza Six is a calm place to sit afterwards.

[Ginza Sony Park](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Ginza%20Sony%20Park%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A75-3-1&query_place_id=ChIJu30bx6aLGGARJZ9QRTZd7YU), rebuilt and reopened in 2025, has no regular shops at all, just rotating exhibitions and events. The department stores, among them [Matsuya Ginza](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%BE%E5%B1%8B%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A7%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A73-6-1) and [Ginza Mitsukoshi](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A7%E4%B8%89%E8%B6%8A%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E9%8A%80%E5%BA%A74-6-16), keep event floors with regional food fairs (bussan-ten), craft sales and small exhibitions that change every week or two. For bigger museum shows, the [Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E4%B8%89%E8%8F%B1%E4%B8%80%E5%8F%B7%E9%A4%A8%E7%BE%8E%E8%A1%93%E9%A4%A8%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8D%83%E4%BB%A3%E7%94%B0%E5%8C%BA%E4%B8%B8%E3%81%AE%E5%86%852-6-2) and the [Artizon Museum](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%A2%E3%83%BC%E3%83%86%E3%82%A3%E3%82%BE%E3%83%B3%E7%BE%8E%E8%A1%93%E9%A4%A8%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E4%B8%AD%E5%A4%AE%E5%8C%BA%E4%BA%AC%E6%A9%8B1-7-2&query_place_id=ChIJOzAxseKLGGARWxBlxNWWRPs) are a short walk north towards Tokyo Station.

- Galleries often sit on the fifth or sixth floor of narrow buildings. Look for the small sign by the lift.
- Many galleries close on Sundays or Mondays, and between shows. Check before you make a special trip.
- Food fairs are busiest on the first and last days. Popular stands can sell out by mid-afternoon.

## Markets, Hibiya Park and the seasons

The [Oedo Antique Market](https://www.antique-market.jp/english/) spreads over the open plaza of the [Tokyo International Forum](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E5%9B%BD%E9%9A%9B%E3%83%95%E3%82%A9%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A9%E3%83%A0%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8D%83%E4%BB%A3%E7%94%B0%E5%8C%BA%E4%B8%B8%E3%81%AE%E5%86%853-5-1) on about two weekend dates a month, with around 250 dealers selling old kimono, ceramics, prints and odd treasures. It takes August off because of the heat and does not run in rain (announcements say 雨天中止, cancelled in rain). Go early for the best pieces, and bring cash.

[Hibiya Park](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%97%A5%E6%AF%94%E8%B0%B7%E5%85%AC%E5%9C%92%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8D%83%E4%BB%A3%E7%94%B0%E5%8C%BA%E6%97%A5%E6%AF%94%E8%B0%B7%E5%85%AC%E5%9C%921-6) hosts free weekend events through the warmer months: the Hibiya Music Festival in late spring, food festivals for meat, paella and more, and in some years an Oktoberfest. The park is being rebuilt in stages until about 2033, and the old open-air concert hall (Yaon) closed after September 2025 for rebuilding, so event spaces move around. The Tokyo Christmas Market started here in 2015 before moving to other parks.

In early August the Ginza street association holds Yukata de Ginbura, an evening when people stroll Ginza in yukata. In winter the lights go up around Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, and [Marunouchi Naka-dori](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E4%B8%B8%E3%81%AE%E5%86%85%E4%BB%B2%E9%80%9A%E3%82%8A%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8D%83%E4%BB%A3%E7%94%B0%E5%8C%BA%E4%B8%B8%E3%81%AE%E5%86%852%E4%B8%81%E7%9B%AE), a few minutes north, is one of the classic illumination walks.

- At the antique market, ask before you photograph a dealer's stock.
- Hibiya Park festivals usually sell food by ticket or cash at each stall. Small coins make it quicker.

Ginza is pricey at dinner but good value at lunch, when many restaurants serve set menus, and the department store food halls (depachika) are perfect for a picnic in Hibiya Park. In the evening, the bars under the tracks between Yurakucho and Shimbashi, including the arches of [Hibiya OKUROJI](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%97%A5%E6%AF%94%E8%B0%B7OKUROJI%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8D%83%E4%BB%A3%E7%94%B0%E5%8C%BA%E5%86%85%E5%B9%B8%E7%94%BA1-7-1), are cheap and lively. ## Questions people ask

**When is Ginza's main street closed to cars?**
On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, from noon into the early evening, with slightly longer hours in summer. It can be called off at short notice in bad weather and on some holidays.

**Can I see kabuki in Ginza without booking a full show?**
Yes. Kabukiza sells single-act seats on the fourth floor, mostly online in advance and a few at the theatre on the day. One act can run from about half an hour to well over an hour.

**Are Ginza galleries free?**
Many are. Commercial galleries and corporate spaces such as Shiseido Gallery and Pola Museum Annex usually charge nothing. Museums and some special exhibitions do.

**When is the Oedo Antique Market at Tokyo International Forum?**
Usually on about two weekend dates a month, with no market in August and none in rain. Check the official calendar before you go, since dates change.

**Is the Hibiya open-air concert hall open?**
No. The Hibiya Yaon closed after September 2025 for rebuilding as part of a long renovation of Hibiya Park. Other parts of the park still host events.

**Is it easy to walk between Ginza, Yurakucho and Hibiya?**
Very. All three are within about 10 minutes of each other on foot, and underground passages link most of the stations.
