# Date ideas in Tokyo, built around events

Tokyo is an easy city to date in: it is safe at night, trains run late and something is always on. The best dates here use the season, whether that means gold lights on bare trees in December, a fireworks night in yukata in August or a garden lit up under red maples in late autumn. Here are ideas for every season and budget, from a free night view to a Christmas Eve dinner you book weeks ahead, with links to our guides and live listings.

## Winter: illumination walks and Christmas markets

From early or mid-November, Tokyo's illuminations turn whole streets into evening walks. Marunouchi's [Naka-dori](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E4%B8%B8%E3%81%AE%E5%86%85%E4%BB%B2%E9%80%9A%E3%82%8A%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8D%83%E4%BB%A3%E7%94%B0%E5%8C%BA%E4%B8%B8%E3%81%AE%E5%86%852%E4%B8%81%E7%9B%AE), wrapped in champagne-gold lights between Tokyo Station and Yurakucho, is the classic, and [Keyakizaka](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E5%85%AD%E6%9C%AC%E6%9C%A8%E3%81%91%E3%82%84%E3%81%8D%E5%9D%82%E9%80%9A%E3%82%8A%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%AF%E5%8C%BA%E5%85%AD%E6%9C%AC%E6%9C%A86%E4%B8%81%E7%9B%AE) in Roppongi Hills frames Tokyo Tower at the end of a lit avenue. Pair a walk with a German-style Christmas market: Roppongi Hills runs one of the longest-standing, and the larger [Tokyo Christmas Market](https://tokyochristmas.net/) has moved between parks over the years, so check where it is this season.

In Japan, Christmas Eve is a couples' night more than a family one. Restaurants with a view, hotel dinners and the best-known light displays are booked or packed, and December 23 to 25 brings the biggest crowds of the season. For a calmer evening, go on a weeknight earlier in December, or pick a display that keeps running into January and February.

- For dinner on December 24, book as early as you can, ideally a month ahead. Many restaurants serve only a set course that night.
- The half hour after sunset, around 4:30 pm in December, gives the best light for photos under the illuminations.

## Night views and observation decks

A night view is the easiest date in Tokyo, and it can cost nothing. The observation decks on the 45th floor of the [Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%BA%81%E7%AC%AC%E4%B8%80%E6%9C%AC%E5%BA%81%E8%88%8E%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF%E5%8C%BA%E8%A5%BF%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF2-8-1) in Shinjuku are free, need no booking and stay open into the evening. For a paid upgrade, [Shibuya Sky](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=SHIBUYA%20SKY%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%8B%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%BA%E6%B8%8B%E8%B0%B72-24-12&query_place_id=ChIJ4Rr2JWiLGGARcyRSHuZ-9G8) on top of Shibuya Scramble Square has an open-air rooftop above the crossing, [Tokyo City View](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E3%82%B7%E3%83%86%E3%82%A3%E3%83%93%E3%83%A5%E3%83%BC%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%AF%E5%8C%BA%E5%85%AD%E6%9C%AC%E6%9C%A86-10-1) in Roppongi Hills looks straight across at Tokyo Tower, and [Tokyo Skytree](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E3%82%B9%E3%82%AB%E3%82%A4%E3%83%84%E3%83%AA%E3%83%BC%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%A2%A8%E7%94%B0%E5%8C%BA%E6%8A%BC%E4%B8%8A1-1-1) gives the highest view in the city.

Sunset is the slot everyone wants, so book it early where tickets are timed, and stay on through blue hour into full dark. Clear winter evenings, especially after rain, give the longest views, and on a good day Mount Fuji shows up on the horizon before dusk.

- Sunset slots at [Shibuya Sky](https://www.shibuya-scramble-square.com/sky/ticket/) sell out first. Booking about an hour before sunset lets you see day, dusk and night.
- Bags are checked at the Metropolitan Government Building entrance. Weekday evenings there are quieter.

## Gardens lit up and museums after dark

In late autumn, some of Tokyo's traditional gardens open in the evening for light-ups under the maples. [Rikugien](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E5%85%AD%E7%BE%A9%E5%9C%92%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%96%87%E4%BA%AC%E5%8C%BA%E6%9C%AC%E9%A7%92%E8%BE%BC6-16-3) in Komagome is the best known, with lit trees reflected in its pond, and it also holds a spring light-up for its weeping cherry. These walks are slow and quiet in a way the city rarely is, and weeknights are much calmer than weekends.

Museums make another good evening. The [Mori Art Museum](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%A3%AE%E7%BE%8E%E8%A1%93%E9%A4%A8%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%AF%E5%8C%BA%E5%85%AD%E6%9C%AC%E6%9C%A86-10-1) at the top of Roppongi Hills has long stayed open until 10 pm on most days except Tuesdays, so you can see contemporary art and then the night view from the same tower. Some museums in Ueno have also held late openings on Friday and Saturday evenings, so check the listings for exhibitions with evening hours.

- Light-up nights have had a limited number of tickets in recent years. Buy ahead online if you can and choose a weeknight.

## Live music: jazz clubs and live houses

Tokyo has one of the deepest jazz scenes in the world. [Blue Note Tokyo](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%83%96%E3%83%AB%E3%83%BC%E3%83%8E%E3%83%BC%E3%83%88%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%AF%E5%8C%BA%E5%8D%97%E9%9D%92%E5%B1%B16-3-16) in Minami-Aoyama and the [Cotton Club](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%B3%E3%83%83%E3%83%88%E3%83%B3%E3%82%AF%E3%83%A9%E3%83%96%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%8D%83%E4%BB%A3%E7%94%B0%E5%8C%BA%E4%B8%B8%E3%81%AE%E5%86%852-7-3&query_place_id=ChIJMTWC-PqLGGARhUvIMSJDN1w) in Marunouchi are the dinner-and-show options, with Japanese and international acts and table seating, while small bars across the city put on sets most nights for a cover charge. [Shinjuku Pit Inn](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF%E3%83%94%E3%83%83%E3%83%88%E3%82%A4%E3%83%B3%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF%E5%8C%BA%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF2-12-4) has been a home of Japanese jazz for decades.

For something louder, the live houses of Shimokitazawa, Koenji and Shibuya have indie bands most nights, often with tickets at the door. It is a cheap, easy date that gets you into neighbourhoods many visitors skip.

- Most live houses add a one-drink charge at the door, usually in cash. Bring small notes.
- Book dinner shows at the big jazz clubs ahead, and check whether seats are assigned or first come.

## Summer: beer gardens and fireworks in yukata

From late spring to early autumn, department store rooftops and parks open beer gardens, many with all-you-can-drink plans for a set time. In Meiji Jingu Gaien, the [Mori no Beer Garden](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%A3%AE%E3%81%AE%E3%83%93%E3%82%A2%E3%82%AC%E3%83%BC%E3%83%87%E3%83%B3%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%96%B0%E5%AE%BF%E5%8C%BA%E9%9C%9E%E3%83%B6%E4%B8%98%E7%94%BA14-13) has long served barbecue and drinks in a large open space under the trees, which makes for an easy, relaxed evening for two.

The classic summer date is a fireworks night in yukata. Rental shops in Asakusa and other areas dress you for the evening, and the big shows on the Sumida, the Edogawa and in Jingu Gaien fill the riverbanks from late July into August. Free spots mean arriving hours early, while paid seats or a dinner cruise on a yakatabune let you turn up just before the start.

- Book yukata rental early for fireworks days, the busiest dates of the year. Wear it left side over right.
- Geta take practice. Bring plasters and plan a shorter walk than usual.

## Making something together: classes for two

A class gives you something to talk about and something to take home. Pottery studios around the city run trial lessons on the wheel, and your pieces are fired and glazed later, then collected or posted. Cooking classes teach sushi, ramen or home-style dishes, and wagashi classes have you shape seasonal sweets from bean paste, then eat them with tea. Tea ceremony, ikebana and calligraphy are calmer choices and work well on a rainy day.

Many classes run in English and book online. Small studios have only a few seats, so reserve a week or two ahead, especially for weekends.

- Fired pottery takes weeks. If you are leaving Japan soon, ask whether the studio can post it abroad.

## Theme parks and sunset at Odaiba

[Tokyo Disneyland](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E3%83%87%E3%82%A3%E3%82%BA%E3%83%8B%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A9%E3%83%B3%E3%83%89%20%E5%8D%83%E8%91%89%E7%9C%8C%E6%B5%A6%E5%AE%89%E5%B8%82%E8%88%9E%E6%B5%9C1-1) and [Tokyo DisneySea](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E3%83%87%E3%82%A3%E3%82%BA%E3%83%8B%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B7%E3%83%BC%20%E5%8D%83%E8%91%89%E7%9C%8C%E6%B5%A6%E5%AE%89%E5%B8%82%E8%88%9E%E6%B5%9C), just over the border in Chiba, are the obvious big day out, and both stay open into the evening with shows after dark. [Sanrio Puroland](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%B5%E3%83%B3%E3%83%AA%E3%82%AA%E3%83%94%E3%83%A5%E3%83%BC%E3%83%AD%E3%83%A9%E3%83%B3%E3%83%89%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E5%A4%9A%E6%91%A9%E5%B8%82%E8%90%BD%E5%90%881-31) in Tama is an indoor park, which helps when it rains. In winter, [Yomiuriland](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%82%88%E3%81%BF%E3%81%86%E3%82%8A%E3%83%A9%E3%83%B3%E3%83%89%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E7%A8%B2%E5%9F%8E%E5%B8%82%E7%9F%A2%E9%87%8E%E5%8F%A34015-1&query_place_id=ChIJ9_FxdIj6GGARU_kzX6Xrguc) in Inagi runs Jewellumination, one of the largest illuminations in the region, so a day of rides can end under the lights.

For a free evening, go to Odaiba for sunset. From [Odaiba Seaside Park](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=%E3%81%8A%E5%8F%B0%E5%A0%B4%E6%B5%B7%E6%B5%9C%E5%85%AC%E5%9C%92%20%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E9%83%BD%E6%B8%AF%E5%8C%BA%E5%8F%B0%E5%A0%B41-4&query_place_id=ChIJ18IK6x2KGGARKTc2yLS-030) the sky turns orange behind the city skyline and Rainbow Bridge lights up across the water. Riding the Yurikamome over the bridge is part of the fun, and the malls nearby have plenty of places for dinner afterwards.

- Tokyo Disney uses dated tickets that can sell out on weekends and holidays. Buy online before you go.
- Weekdays at any theme park are much calmer than weekends and school holidays.

## Day trips for two, and budget versus special

A day out of the city makes a date feel like a trip. Kamakura has temples, the sea and hydrangeas in June, Yokohama has the harbour, Chinatown and the Red Brick Warehouse, and Hakone pairs mountain views with a hot spring around an hour and a half from Shinjuku. Our day trips guide covers the festivals worth timing a visit for.

Good dates in Tokyo do not need to cost much. A free night view, a picnic in cherry blossom season, a neighbourhood festival with food stalls or a walk under the illuminations costs little beyond the train fare. Save the money for one special thing, such as dinner with a view, a table at a jazz club or a night at a Hakone inn, and book that part ahead.

- Most shrines, temples and illuminations are free. Combine two free things with one paid one for an easy evening.

## Questions people ask

**What do couples do on Christmas Eve in Japan?**
Christmas Eve is a date night here: dinner out, then a walk under the illuminations. Restaurants and hotels with a view book up weeks ahead, so reserve early.

**What are some free date ideas in Tokyo?**
The free observation decks at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, illumination walks in winter, sunset at Odaiba Seaside Park, shrine visits and neighbourhood festivals all cost nothing.

**What is a good rainy-day date in Tokyo?**
A museum with evening hours, a pottery or cooking class, a jazz club or an indoor park such as Sanrio Puroland. Observation decks are less rewarding when clouds are low.

**Do I need to book observation decks?**
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building needs no booking. Paid decks such as [Shibuya Sky](https://www.shibuya-scramble-square.com/sky/ticket/) sell timed tickets, and sunset slots often sell out, so book online ahead.

**Is Valentine's Day different in Japan?**
Yes. On February 14 women traditionally give chocolate to men, and men return the gesture on White Day, March 14. Department stores hold big chocolate fairs in the weeks before.
