Kai silk, originally produced in the Gun'nai region of Yamanashi Prefecture from the Meiji era to the early Showa era, was a domestically made silk fabric that replaced imported textiles and was mainly used as a haori lining. In modern times, as people discovered individuality and grappled with their place in society, Kai silk—with its variety of colors and designs—became a way to express personal style through clothing. This exhibition introduces the story of how Japanese people began expressing individuality starting with garment linings, featuring over 100 items including repatriated Kai silk pieces, haori jackets, and fabric samples.
