Murayama Kinsen (1885–1967), a sculptor from Maebashi who lived from the Meiji to the Showa era, moved to Tokyo in 1900 and apprenticed under ivory sculptor Kaneda Kanejiro. He gained recognition for his ivory carvings exhibited at the Japan Art Association and Tokyo Sculpture Society, earning several awards. After completing military service and returning home in 1910, he shifted his focus to wood carving, gradually distancing himself from group exhibitions and pursuing his own path. This exhibition marks the first time his works, known for their distinctive style, are displayed at the museum.
