Toru Kono, who was active during the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras, is an essential figure in the history of modern Japanese art. Throughout his life, he pursued his own unique style, experimenting not only with meticulous detail but also with various painting techniques such as oil painting, copperplate and lithography, as well as traditional Japanese painting. He also illustrated literary works and designed book covers. This year, three exhibitions highlighting Kono's career will be held from October to March. The first, the special autumn exhibition, focuses on his life and most notable works.
