SUMMARY:Playfulness of the Floating World: Humor in Ukiyo-e and the Turbulence of the Late Edo and Meiji Periods
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features the ukiyo-e collection of the Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts\, with a focus on comedic prints from the late Edo to Meiji periods. Highlights include Hiroshige Utagawa's 'The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido' (Hoeido Edition)\, the caricature 'At First Glance\, He Looks Like a Nice Man' by Kuniyoshi Utagawa (where multiple figures form a man’s profile)\, humorous catfish and measles prints\, satirical art from the end of the Edo period\, Enlightenment-themed works by Shosai Ikkei\, and social satire cartoons by Kiyochika Kobayashi.
