In Chinese culture, animals have long been associated with good fortune—for example, deer symbolize prosperity, bats represent happiness, cicadas are regarded as immortals, and carp embody career success. Over time, even mythical creatures like the qilin, phoenix, and dragon were imagined as symbols of good luck. These beliefs reflect deep human feelings and ideas about animals. This seminar introduces the fascinating world of these auspicious animals, known as 'ruishou.' Speaker: Professor Naoki Uchiyama, Institute for the Study of Humanities and Cultures, Chiba University (specialty: Chinese philosophy).
