Located in Ayuzawa, Minami-Alps City, this Rinzai Zen temple stands on the former site of Saiko-ji, a large Shingon temple. Kocho-zen Temple was founded in 1316 by the Zen master Muso Kokushi. The temple is famous for its approximately 700-year-old juniper trees, known as the 'Four Junipers Planted by Muso Kokushi,' which are designated as a national natural monument. In autumn, the trees at the temple gate and within the grounds turn vibrant shades of red. The temple also serves as the family temple of Lady Oi, the mother of the famous warlord Takeda Shingen.
