Nakatsu Gorge, stretching for about 10 kilometers along the Nakatsu River, is a dramatic V-shaped valley with steep rock walls on both sides carved from sandstone and chert that date back approximately 150 million years. Designated as a scenic spot by the prefecture, it is one of Okuchichibu's most famous places for autumn leaves. The gorge is especially striking when colorful foliage decorates its 100-meter cliffs and unique rock formations. The 'Jorō Momiji' (Courtesan Maple) near the front of the Mochioke Tunnel is particularly well-known. Since the Seibu Bus service stops farther away at Kososato, it is recommended to travel by car and stop at scenic points along the way to enjoy the best views.
