Nestled deep in the Yamizo Mountains of Tochigi Prefecture along a clear mountain stream, this renowned Rinzai Zen temple is steeped in history. The famed haiku poet Matsuo Basho visited here and wrote one of his haiku. The temple is known for its fresh greenery in spring, vibrant autumn leaves, and beautiful snowy landscapes in winter. Since it serves as a training hall for Zen monks, entry into the main hall is restricted, but visitors are free to explore the grounds. The autumn foliage typically reaches its peak between early and late November.
