In 1999, the historic buildings of Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Nikkozan Rinnoji Temple, Nikko Futarasan Shrine, and their surrounding natural scenery were collectively designated as the 'Shrines and Temples of Nikko' World Heritage Site.
